Today is Giving Tuesday, for the ninth time in the Czech Republic
12/3/2024
Today, hundreds of millions of people around the world will come together to help others — including in the Czech Republic. The ninth edition of the global day of generosity and good deeds, Giving Tuesday, is taking place. As of today, more than 360 campaigns and good deeds have been registered on the website, and over a quarter of Czechs plan to get involved, most commonly by offering material help.
Giving Tuesday was created as a counterpoint to the shopping frenzy of Black Friday.
“While Black Friday draws attention and generates billions in sales, Giving Tuesday is becoming a strong symbol of responsibility and solidarity,” says Lucie Mádlová, founder and director of the Association of Social Responsibility, which has been coordinating Giving Tuesday in the Czech Republic since 2016. Last year, Czechs donated over CZK 97 million on Giving Tuesday and performed countless good deeds.
A traditional nationwide survey conducted by Ipsos for the Association of Social Responsibility revealed that Czechs this year primarily want to donate items or money for charitable purposes. Overall, those who contributed in the past year supported: children (40%), victims of natural disasters or wars (35%), animals (30%), and people with disabilities (23%). The survey also revealed a surprising new trend — growing interest in helping locally, rather than abroad.
Czechs as donors: Who gives and how?
Some prefer to volunteer, others give occasionally, and some are “declutterers.” The research identified the following donor profiles among Czechs:
-
33% Volunteers – mainly donate their time and occasionally give financial contributions
-
26% Impulsive – give sporadically by purchasing goods, small donations, or giving items
-
17% Deniers – do not participate; helping others is not important to them
-
10% Activists – contribute regularly and long-term, give time and items; helping others is a key value
-
8% Donors – contribute financially on a long-term, regular basis in various ways
-
6% Declutterers – donate old things, but otherwise do not engage
“Four out of ten Czechs donated to charitable causes in the past year, and a tenth of them gave more than CZK 5,000. The most popular forms of giving were DMS text donations and buying charity merchandise,” adds Markéta Kneblíková, Communications Manager, commenting on the results.
On Tuesday, December 3, over a hundred volunteers across the Czech Republic will be distributing Giving Pralines, made by people with disabilities, encouraging the public to support good causes. In the evening, the Petřín Lookout Tower will be lit up in Giving Tuesday colors.
On Giving Tuesday, anyone can choose a campaign by theme or region directly on the website www.givingtuesday.cz. For example, a foundation is looking for just three best pieces from your wardrobe for those in need, a wig maker for children with cancer is seeking support for their work, a parish offers adoption of organ pipes in an effort to save them, and an organization is looking for new volunteers for its dog blood donor registry, among many others.
The main partner of this year’s edition is ČEPS, and publishing house Albatros is also a partner. Supporters include Ipsos, Dodo, ADRA, Darujme.cz, Madlove Studio, and SUPERKODERS.
The Giving Tuesday survey was conducted by Ipsos for the Association of Social Responsibility on a representative sample of the Czech population aged 18 to 65. A total of 1,000 respondents were surveyed online in October 2024.
